At HelpAlong, we recognise that supporting participants, especially those with complex behavioural and health needs, can be both deeply rewarding and emotionally challenging. We also acknowledge the complexity of the work our frontline teams perform every day and thus, we are committed to ensuring your psychological safety at work.
What Are Psychosocial Hazards?
Psychosocial hazards are aspects of work that can affect how you feel and function. These include:
- High job demands or low job control
- Exposure to aggressive or unpredictable behaviour
- Inadequate support, supervision, or communication
- Bullying, harassment, or conflict
- Remote or isolated work
- Role ambiguity or lack of clarity
Over time, these hazards can lead to stress, fatigue, or burnout, affecting both well-being and the quality of support delivery.
What HelpAlong Is Doing
The WHS team is working to strengthen our systems in line with the Model Code of Practice: Managing Psychosocial Hazards at Work. Here’s what’s happening:
- Partnership with IPAM – We’re engaging with the Injury Prevention and Management (IPAM) program to access expert guidance and resources tailored to our workforce.
- People at Work Survey – This anonymous survey will help us understand what’s working well and where we can improve. Your honest feedback will guide future wellbeing initiatives.
- New Policy and Procedure – A dedicated Psychological Hazards at Work Policy will soon be introduced to outline prevention, reporting, and response processes, ensuring everyone knows how to access help and support.
Capacity Building and Training – We’ll continue investing in staff training, debriefing structures, and supervision practices to ensure every team member feels supported, valued, and heard.
Your Role in a Safe Workplace
- Psychological safety is a shared responsibility. You can help by:
- Speaking up early about stress or workload concerns
- Supporting colleagues and promoting respect in all interactions
- Participating in the upcoming People at Work survey
- Using HelpAlong’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) when needed
Our Commitment
HelpAlong’s commitment to your well-being is clear: we want you to feel safe, supported, and connected in your role. Together, we’ll continue to build a workplace culture where everyone can thrive — mentally, emotionally, and professionally.
