Who is eligible for SIL?

SIL is available to NDIS participants aged 18–65 with funding included in their plan.

What’s the difference between SIL and SDA?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) are both essential components of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), but they serve different purposes in supporting individuals with disabilities.

  1. Supported Independent Living (SIL):

  • SIL focuses on support services that help participants live as independently as possible in shared or individual housing.
  • These supports can include assistance with daily tasks such as cooking, personal care, household management, and participating in community activities.
  • SIL does not cover the cost of rent or housing; rather, it funds the support staff who provide assistance with day-to-day living.
  • Who it’s for: People with higher support needs who require help to live independently but don’t necessarily need specialised housing.
  1. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA):

  • SDA provides funding for housing designed specifically for people with extreme functional impairments or very high support needs. These homes are built to meet the needs of individuals who require more accessible or purpose-built housing, such as homes with wider doorways, hoist facilities, or other specialised features.
  • SDA funding is for the cost of the physical building itself, not for the support provided within the home (which can be covered by SIL or other NDIS supports).
  • Who it’s for: People with significant disabilities who require specialised housing solutions to meet their needs.

How does the NDIA decide on SIL funding?

The NDIA decides on SIL funding by assessing a participant’s specific support needs, functional abilities, and personal goals, ensuring that SIL aligns with their NDIS plan. The decision is based on the reasonable and necessary criteria, ensuring that supports are related to the participant’s disability and offer value for money. The NDIA also evaluates living arrangements, assessing whether shared living is appropriate and if informal supports can help. SIL providers submit a Roster of Care to assist in determining the level of support needed.

  • Assesses support needs, functional abilities, and goals.
  • Follows the NDIS reasonable and necessary criteria.
  • Evaluates living arrangements and informal supports.
  • Considers value for money.
  • Uses a Roster of Care from SIL providers to finalise funding decisions. If you need help navigating the process, reach out to us for expert support!

What happens after SIL approval?

After SIL approval, the participant selects an NDIS-registered SIL provider and establishes a Service Agreement to outline the support services. They then transition into the accommodation, working with the provider to set up a Roster of Care, which details the support they will receive daily. Ongoing monitoring ensures that the support meets the participant’s needs, with regular reviews allowing adjustments as necessary.

  • Choose an NDIS-registered SIL provider.
  • Establish a Service Agreement.
  • Move into the accommodation.
  • Set up a Roster of Care.
  • Regular monitoring and review of supports.
