Changing NDIS Providers: How to Plan a Safe Transition

A step-by-step guide to changing NDIS providers while protecting continuity, safety and choice.

Participants can change providers. Planning the handover can reduce service gaps and keep the person’s preferences at the centre.

Know why you want change

You do not need to justify your choice, but identifying the outcome you want can help you select the next provider. You may first ask the current provider to change workers, schedules or parts of the agreement.

Review the current agreement

Check notice periods, cancellations, final claims, records and equipment. If the issue involves safety or serious misconduct, contact an advocate, emergency service or the NDIS Commission as appropriate rather than managing it alone.

Confirm the new provider first

Verify registration where required, capacity, start date, price, worker competence and contingency arrangements. Avoid ending essential support before a safe alternative is confirmed where possible.

Control information sharing

Decide what the new provider needs, who can share it and how. Accurate medication, health, behaviour, communication, risk and emergency information can be critical, but only relevant information should transfer.

Special care for SIL

Ask how the support agreement relates to the tenancy or occupancy arrangement. Current SIL standards emphasise choice, conflict management and housing stability, but each arrangement differs and independent advice may be appropriate.

This is general information, not legal or tenancy advice. Transition needs vary according to safety, agreements, housing, funding and support complexity.
