SIL, SDA and ILO answer different questions. Understanding the distinction can make home and living conversations less confusing.
SIL is support
Supported Independent Living generally refers to paid support with daily tasks in a person’s home. It may involve shared support, but the roster and ratio should reflect assessed needs and the funded arrangement. SIL does not generally pay rent, groceries or other ordinary living costs.
SDA is specialist housing
Specialist Disability Accommodation relates to specially designed housing for eligible participants with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. The housing provider and support provider can be different organisations.
ILO is an individualised arrangement
Individualised Living Options is a process for designing how a person wants to live and the supports around that choice. It may explore hosts, housemates and informal supports. It is not a building and is not the same as rostered 24-hour support.
Ask which agreement covers what
Before deciding, identify who owns or manages the home, who provides support, what each agreement covers, what costs are separate and how conflicts of interest are handled.
Start with the life you want
The acronym should come after the goal. Consider location, relationships, culture, privacy, daily routine, accessibility, safety, support needs and how the arrangement could adapt over time.
NDIS home and living funding is individual and subject to current rules and decisions. Seek independent advice for your circumstances.
