About this support

How Individualised Living Options (ILO) may help

Individualised Living Options, or ILO, are designed one person at a time. ILO starts with your idea of a good home life—where you want to live, who you want around you and what support would help the arrangement work well. It is not a building or a fixed rostered model.

How an ILO arrangement works

An ILO arrangement can look different for each person. You might live with a host, housemate, friend or on your own with a mix of paid and unpaid support. The arrangement normally brings together:

  • primary support—the regular support at the centre of your living arrangement
  • supplementary support—extra help, back-up or respite that keeps the arrangement sustainable
  • monitoring and adjustment—checking that the arrangement remains safe, stable and right for you.

Exploration and design

We listen to what a good home means to you, map your strengths and relationships, consider risks and safeguards, and work through possible living arrangements before a model is agreed.

Support once you move

We help put the agreed supports in place, clarify everyone’s role and review the arrangement. Changes should be made with you, not around you.

What we discuss before getting started

A strong ILO arrangement needs time and honest conversation. We discuss your preferences, communication, privacy, culture, decision-making, household responsibilities, back-up support and what should happen if an arrangement changes. Any potential host or housemate arrangement also needs careful matching and clear boundaries.

Important: ILO funding is for supports, not ordinary living expenses such as rent, groceries or utilities. It is generally not intended to provide rostered 24-hour support in the same way as SIL.

Common questions

Is ILO only for people who want to live alone?

No. ILO can support different living choices, including living with a host, housemate, friend or on your own. The arrangement must be designed around the individual.

Can an ILO arrangement change over time?

Yes. Regular monitoring is part of ILO. If goals, relationships, risks or circumstances change, the support arrangement should be reviewed with the participant.
