Privacy, Consent and Information Sharing

Practical questions about consent, privacy and sharing NDIS information.

Personal information should be handled respectfully, securely and only for a clear purpose.

Questions you can ask

  • What information do you need and why?
  • Who will see it and how will it be stored?
  • Do I have a choice about sharing it?
  • How can I access or correct my information?
  • What happens if privacy or data security is breached?

Consent should be meaningful

Consent should be informed, specific enough for the purpose, communicated in a way the person understands and revisited when circumstances change. Legal authority and mandatory reporting obligations may apply in some situations.

Share the minimum needed

Do not place sensitive health, behaviour, identity or plan documents in an unsecured message unless the provider has confirmed the process. Remove irrelevant information and check the recipient.
